“With commitment and consistent micro-steps, you can overcome or heal your pain, brokenness or weakness, and turn it into your strength. Allow yourself to belong in your own head, surrender what scares you and give yourself and others as much grace as God gives you! Remember, what happens to you does not define you.”

Two words.

It’s been a dilemma. Should Hannah use the word “overcoming” or the word “healing” in her book title? We spoke many times about each word's energy and the difference it would make to her reader. In her manuscript's early days, the word “overcoming” felt like a heavy, intimidating metal sword. When placed in a full subtitle, the concept “overcoming female oppression” became too daunting a task. Back then, Hannah said she felt the suffering of the whole world’s women bearing down on her shoulders.

“Healing” in the title felt nicer, lighter, and far less disruptive. “Healing” felt less stressful—even safe perhaps.

As I coached Hannah through penning her story and digging deeper into what she believed about abuse, grooming, losing her innocence, and choosing her own path, something happened. It was as if right in front of me, a fire started. The heat grew and the intensity of Hannah’s conviction became a bonfire and from the flames came words—hot words that exploded into chapters. And in those words and chapters came bullet points, checklists, and an admonition to other women who had also been used up and denied their sovereignty.

The word “healing” became too soft. It felt impotent and invisible for the revolution Hannah sought. The word “overcoming”—especially as it related to female oppression—became essential. Hannah understood that healing in women’s lives was the beginning, but healing did not ultimately reflect freedom, victory, power, and joy.

Female oppression in religion, societal norms, and cult practices must be fought and overcome in every way for young women and little girls to own their bodies, their independence, and their sovereignty. Oppression must be overcome completely for a woman to truly own her life, her path, and her happiness. This new term became a banner in a larger battle—larger than Hannah’s story itself.

As she wrote and tightened the edits of her manuscript, Hannah went from being the creator of content to a warrior of words. She shared the manuscript with multiple beta readers and was stunned by their experience. Her story had an impact on the lives of other women. These women also caught fire through her chapters and her admonition. Some shared with Hannah through tears and confessions that their lives were forever changed by her story and advice.

Hannah seemed to hold herself differently, aware that her words had weight and that her steps must be intentional. This book had a purpose.

Rarely have I seen the book-writing process transform a person as deeply as I’ve seen with Hannah. She has BECOME her title. She exudes the principles of self-direction and personal sovereignty. She knows the value of permitting oneself to have joy, self-direction, and freedom. Healing was just the beginning.

Hannah Stauber is the epitome of the word “overcoming”.

Brooke Lambert Mecham, Reader

Hannah’s true life story is impressive. There are so many life lessons and solutions in these pages. She becomes the seventh wife, at the tender age of fourteen, to a polygamist. Once she knew in her gut that it was time to leave, she received a confirmation from God that he would love her for eternity regardless of whether she stayed or left. She explains how a single mother of four children goes from an eighth-grade education to a master's degree. As they read the book ‘Give Yourself Permission: Overcoming Female Oppression’, they are exposed to things that negatively affect most of us, but she explains how to fix them. She gives suggestions and pathways so anyone who has not found their voice can, and with that comes the LOVE of ONESELF. This book will help you find your magnificent voice, whether male or female. I am genuinely impressed by Hannah and her family.

Lisa K. Read, Reader

We can not get through life without going through some inevitable, measurable trauma. Hannah Stauber has written a phenomenal book, taking each reader through her background in polygamy and recounting the tumultuous years she spent with her first husband, Tom Green. Readers will be drawn into her story, experiencing waves of emotion as Hannah works her way to an eventual path to freedom. That Hannah came from a background of polygamy does not separate the reader from identifying the “Tom’s” in their lives, as polygamy does not separate one from the same kinds of manipulations, trauma, and abuse anyone can experience in any situation. Her story is raw, open, and honest.

Hannah’s life was not an easy one, but she did not give up and kept pressing forward to eventually reach her goals and complete freedom. As we journey along with Hannah, we will find her book gripping as we are pulled into her story. She has woven together a beautiful tapestry of healing, providing her readers with tools so that they may one day also experience complete healing for themselves. Her writing style is not too technical and is easy to read. When she speaks of “Joy,” the reader will literally experience JOY for themselves as they read each suggestion for acquiring “Joy” through healing.

The road map that Hannah has laid down for a path to healing is not limited to a particular age group or community group. Anyone can receive complete healing and wholeness through Hannah’s incredible wisdom that fills each page. One of the encouraging expressions Hannah loves to use is “Free you, Be You, Do You”!

I found Hannah’s book to be one of the most astounding and best books I have ever read! She has created a manual for healing that one can turn to time and time again. Each reader will walk away feeling as though she is speaking to them personally and indeed, she is. Her book is full of passion, encouraging words, and so much compassion. As she heals, we celebrate her, and as we heal, she celebrates us. ‘Give Yourself Permission: Overcoming Female Oppression’ is a LIFELINE for anyone seeking healing from traumatic oppression.
